5. Southern Miss
The C-USA might be the best Mid-Major conference there is. They have multiple teams who can make a run in the NCAA tournament and one of them is Southern Miss. It seems like Scott Berry always has that type of team down in Hattiesburg.
In 2021 USM lead the. C-USA in strikeouts and lowest batting average allowed. They were also top five in home runs and runs scored. The Golden Eagles narrowly lost at Ole Miss in a winner-take-all regional final game last year.
Look for USM to be even better in 2022 and possibly even host a regional.
4. Sacramento State
Currently at 7-0 and with a sweep of Long Beach State, the team who took the series from the defending champions, the Hornets are sitting very well right now. Dawsen Bacho leads the team with a .435 avg. and is hitting the ball very well for the Hornets. This team however was not projected high in the D1 Baseball WAC predictions but as of now they are proving them wrong. Pump the breaks for a bit for another week though, LBSU might just be a fraud…
3. Coastal Carolina
The 2016 National Champions find themselves on this list at #3. Gary Gillmore once again finds himself with a great team. Once again, I am disagreeing with D1 baseball as they have South Alabama picked to win the Sun Belt. I am going with the 2016 Champions here, with the likes of SS Eric Brown and pitcher Michael Knorr and for the fact that South Alabama lost a lot of talent I have Coastal winning the Sun Belt and making someone’s regional a nightmare come June.
2. Louisiana Tech
As I said at the start of this, the C-USA is loaded with talent. Louisiana Tech won the conference last year and they’re destined to repeat. The Bulldogs are lead by RHP Jonathan Fincher and outfielder Phil Matulia who currently leads the team in Home Runs. It will be a great battle between them and Southern Miss for the regular season and potentially the tournament crown in the C-USA.
Both should definitely make a regional but I think the Bulldogs take the C-USA title.
The powder blue uniforms alone are enough for them to be on this list, but they’re actually a very good team as we saw in the series win over Florida during Week 1.
Derek Orndorff is having a great start to the season for the #20 Flames as he has blasted five home runs in this young season. The pitching isn’t bad either, as Max Alba currently leads the team with 12 strikeouts and has a 2.79 ERA. The Flames can go to Omaha. Scott Jackson has a remarkable team and if a mid major is going to Omaha it might very well be the Flames.
Only time will tell, but it might be the year of the mid major. It’s been six years since a mid major won the title. It’s due to happen again, and it just might be one of these five teams that does it.
(Sorry, my Liberty Class of 2019 degree may be inflicting a bit of a bias here, but I do believe they’re as strong of a mid-major as there is this season. Go Flames baby!)
