The time has finally arrived Dawg fans! After coming up just short of the postseason last year, the boys are gearing up to make a run in 2022. So soak in that National Championship and gear up for baseball season.
This Georgia pitching staff will look very similar to last year, returning thirteen pitchers from 2021, including preseason All-SEC pitchers in RHP Jonathan Cannon and RHP Jaden Woods. Cannon put up really good numbers last season, posting a 4-2 record with an ERA of 3.98 in 13 appearances (12 starts). He led the team in innings pitched with 63.1. Woods had an incredible freshman season, securing a 2nd team Freshman All-American spot. The sophomore made seventeen appearances, including four starts, posting a 4-1 record with an ERA of 4.58 in 53 innings. He was the anchor of the injury-ridden Georgia bullpen and will need to be a key contributor again in 2022 in order for the Bulldogs to make a deep postseason run.
Georgia’s starting lineup will bear just as much resemblance as their pitching staff, if not more. Eight position players from 2021 decided to stick around to try and bring a College World Series Championship back to Athens. These returners include leading hitter Connor Tate, who recently earned his degree. Tate hit .344 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs last season. Another returner, who is my breakout candidate for the Bulldogs in 2022, is Corey Collins. The sophomore started hot in 2021 but cooled off slightly toward the end of the season. Collins started 44 games at DH, which is likely where he will stay this year, and hit .283 with 8 home runs and 37 RBIs as a freshman. He was also recently ranked among the country’s best at his position by D1 Baseball.
This team has the perfect mix of depth, experience, and balance to be among the best in the country this year.
The diamond dawgs will open their season on Friday at Foley Field against the Albany Great Danes out of the American East conference. Albany finished below .500 last year, but are returning some key players that should make them a formidable opponent for the boys out of Athens.
