COLLEGE STATION, Texas– When talk first surfaced of letting a coach as great and well respected as Rob Childress walk away, the first question many Aggie fans asked, was “is there really a better coaching option available?”. Ross Bjork and company answered that question late on Tuesday night when they announced that they had agreed to a contract with Jim Schlossnagle, the 18 year head coach of national powerhouse TCU.
Coach Schloss built TCU into a national power almost right in front of Aggies fans eyes. After coming into to the Station regional in 2012 and knocking out the Aggies, the would then go on to defeat the Aggies in Super Regionals in both 2015 and 2016. These two years were part of a 4 consecutive year run to Omaha. Since 2004 when he arrived at TCU he has won a conference regular season title 12 of the 18 years and has won the conference tournament 9 of those years, as well as making the NCAA Tournament 15 of those 18 years.
Coach Schlossnagle is a home run hire for the Aggies in every sense of the word. He was one of the best coaches of the past 10 years and already knows how to recruit the state well. This hire will reopen the pipeline to the DFW area, an area which A&M was losing out on to him while he was at TCU. He also knows how to win on the biggest stage as he has complied 11 wins in his 5 trips to Omaha for the College World Series finishing in the final 4 in consecutive years.
The future looks very bright for Aggie baseball. With the tools, facilities and the draw of the SEC, things in Aggieland should turn around quick, after a rare down year. Another note is that Coach Schlossnagle becomes only the 4th head coach in the last 62 years, so he will have plenty of time to build A&M into the national power it can be.
