Florida State and Southern Miss opened up the Oxford Regional at Swayze Field on Friday. An early error helped put the Golden Eagles on top, but the Seminoles kept attacking and pulled out a 5-2 win. Southern Miss is banished to the losers’ bracket game early on Saturday. The Seminoles will play the winners of Game 2 of the Regional Tournament in the nightcap with a chance to advance to the Regional Finals.
The error committed at 3rd Base in the bottom of the 1st inning allowed a run to score before the first out was recorded. Eventually the inning would yield 2 runs for Southern Miss before Parker Messick settled down on the mound for Florida State. Messick ended up going 6 innings with 2 unearned runs on 7 hits. He picked up the win while Jack Anderson is credited with the 4 out save.
Florida State did their damage all with the long ball. Lacey launched a 2-run bomb in the 6th and was followed a few batters later by a Cabell solo shot. Hunter Stanley left the game after 6 innings on the hook for the loss. Only 1 of the 3 runs he allowed was earned in his 104-pitch outing. Ethridge was called on out of the bullpen, but he couldn’t hold the score in place. Nelson took him deep to left for a 2-run insurance blast.
Southern Miss fans feel as if they were robbed of hosting privileges this season. Starting 0-1 in the Oxford Regional does not help their case, but a win tomorrow could make for a competitive Sunday. Florida State is feeling excited going into Saturday, but matchup against Ole Miss and Doug Nikhazy might wipe away their smile. Florida State is certainly rooting for SEMO to win the nightcap and avoid Doug Day in Oxford.
