Coming into this, Georgia Tech had just lost 2/3 to Kennesaw State last weekend. Meanwhile, Clemson had just swept Louisville and then defeated USC Upstate in their midweek game this past Wednesday.
Georgia Tech really needed to pick up some momentum and find a way to battle back from losing 2/3 this last weekend, they did just that and more.
On the mound for Friday night, LHP Brant Hurter went seven full innings. He struck out eight batters and walked none on just 96 pitches. LHP Sam Crawford came in relief, he went two shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out three.
Offensively Friday night, Jake DeLeo produced a single to give Tech the lead, after a sac bunt produced the first run. The Jackets then opened the game up thanks to a Luke Waddell triple, Andrew Jenkins two RBI single and Tres Gonzalez bunt RBI. Yellow Jackets won that game by a final score of 6-1.
On the mound for Saturday afternoon, RHP Andy Archer went five innings, he gave up four runs on six hits and struck out eight. In relief, RHP Zach Maxwell came in and gave up a run, but struck out four. Followed by Luke Bartnicki, who went one inning to get an out in the top of the ninth. RHP Chance Huff then came in and got two outs to strand the Clemson runner on second.
It was an exciting day offensively on Saturday. John Anderson and Andrew Jenkins both led the way with two-hit performances, that also includes the two run homer by Anderson to give Tech the lead. Tres Gonzalez and Cameron Turley both also contributed to knocking in runs.
Saturday, on a 2-1 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Justyn-Henry Malloy absolutely hit a bomb. That lead to the walk-off homer, to win by a final score of 6-5, clinching the series over Clemson.
Sunday’s game was full of drama and anxiety to say the least.
On the mound for Sunday afternoon, RHP Marquis Grissom Jr went 1.2 innings, giving up five runs on five hits and striking out four. LHP Dalton Smith and LHP Joseph Mannelly came in and settled the game. They pitched a combined 4.1 innings, giving up just two runs on two hits. LHP Sam Crawford then came in and pitched two innings, only allowing one run on four hits, to get the win. To close, RHP Chance Huff made his second appearance and slammed the door shut for a three out save.
Offensively, Clemson roared straight out the gate, scoring six runs in the first few innings. Until Tech scored seven runs on six hits in the fourth inning, to take the lead. Contributing to the runs, Andrew Jenkins, Stephen Reid, and Luke Waddell all had an RBI. John Anderson hit a two run shot to left field, to make it a 7-6 game. Andrew Jenkins go ahead homer in the seventh, solidified the 9-8 win. Also contributing on the day was Justyn-Henry Malloy and Cameron Turley, who both hit doubles.
This was the second time this season that the Yellow Jackets have swept an ACC opponent.
Georgia Tech heads to Miami this weekend to continue ACC play. First pitches are scheduled for 7 PM, 7 PM, and 1 PM. Those games will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra and WREK 91.1 FM.
