When Mississippi State dropped game 3 to Arkansas 3 weeks ago, Tanner Allen assured the Bulldog faithful that this team would be fine. He wasn’t lying, as the Bulldogs have been on a tear since that day. The streak continued tonight as the Boys in Maroon downed their rivals from Oxford by a score of 5-2 in front of a crowd of 10,000+ at Dudy Noble Field. The Diamond Dawgs used a 2-run 8th inning to seal the victory and open Super Bulldog Weekend 2021 with a victory over the Rebels.
Christian MacLeod drew the start for the Bulldogs. The lefty from Huntsville went 5 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while fanning 5. Preston Johnson (1-0) followed MacLeod, recording the win, pitching 2 innings of 1 hit baseball, giving up 0 runs and striking out 4. Landon Sims (4) closed out the contest with a 2 inning save. Giving up 0 runs, 1 hit, and fanning 3.
The Boys in Maroon struck first on Friday when Tanner Allen doubled and then scored on a Kamren James single to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. The Rebels evened up the contest in the top of the 3rd when Cael Baker singled and Jacob Gonzalez walked. Baker then scored when Peyton Chatagnier bounced a ball to short that was mis-played by Lane Forsythe to knot the contest at 1. Ole Miss took the lead in the top of the 4th on a TJ McCants solo shot to the Adkerson Plaza that put the visitors on top 2-1. The lead was short lived as Kamren James led off the bottom of the 4th with a missile that landed at the front door of the Left Field Lofts to knot the contest at 2.
The Bulldogs would take the lead for good in the bottom of the 6th when Tanner Allen tripled and scored on a Kamren James sacrifice fly and make the score 3-2. The Boys in Maroon would add 2 insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th when Scotty Dubrule doubled and scored on a Rowdey Jordan single. Tanner Allen then singled to push Jordan to 3rd. Jordan then scored on a Kamren James sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2. Landon Sims slammed the door on the Rebels in the top of the 9th and sent the Bulldog faithful home from The Carnegie Hall of College Baseball with smiles on their faces and a series opening W, making the Bulldogs 15-2 in their last 17 meetings with The School up North.
The Bulldogs were led at the plate by Kamren James, who went 2-2 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Tanner Allen went 3-4 with a double and a triple and scored twice. Scotty Dubrule and Rowdey Jordan each added a hit and Rowdey had an RBI.
Also worthy of mention was Logan Tanner’s mind-boggling strike ‘em out throw ‘em out double play in the top of the 5th. See that play below:
At the time of publication, the win shirt presentation has not been posted, but one can only imagine that it went to Kamren James.
The Bulldogs look to take the series tomorrow with Will Bednar taking the mound. First pitch is set for 2pm CT, following Coach Mike Leach’s first Maroon-White Spring Game.
In honor of Landon Sims absolutely slamming the door at the end of the game, here’s some Whitesnake to finish your evening.
