Cael Baker Might Be Ready to Assume Elko’s Role

Ole Miss faced off against Austin Peay on Tuesday night. As is the case with many midweek games, the Rebels dominated. Ole Miss led by 12 runs after 6.5 innings and were given a Run Rule victory. With it being the only matchup this week, and it being shortened to only 7 innings, the Rebel bullpen should be well rested going into a big rivalry series against the Mississippi State Bulldogs this weekend.

Tyler Myers picked up the win and improved to 3-1 on the season. After 3 innings of work, Freshman Jack Dougherty was called on to get some action. Dougherty struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced in an impressive collegiate debut. Adcock and Johnson each got to work through an inning of their own as well, but with the big lead, no save was awarded to anybody.

The offense was consistent. The Rebels scored in each inning except for the 2nd and racked up plenty of crooked numbers. Cael Baker did his best Tim Elko impersonation with a 4-4 day at the plate. Baker being able to fill the shoes of the injured captain would be a huge boost for this team. If he makes a habit out of hitting 2 singles, a double, a homerun, and 6 RBI, the Rebel offense will be able to contend with anybody. The Governors’ pitching staff only allowed 2 free passes, but the Rebels were able to come up with plenty of hits and managed to chase 6 pitchers out of the game.

The DiamondRebs will travel to Starkville this weekend and try to steal a series from their instate rival. The pitchers will have had plenty of rest and hopefully don’t walk nearly as many batters as they did during the Arkansas series. Game 1 will be televised on the SEC Network at 6 PM Central (if the schedule can manage to go 3 whole days without getting rearranged).
