#18 Florida vs #24 Florida State Preview (Round 2)

31 Days Ago, the Florida Gators (21-11) marched into Dick Howser Stadium to play the Seminoles of Florida State (16-12). The Gators came in confidently, having entered on their hottest stretch of the season, but left holding their tails between their legs, getting drubbed 10-2. That Gator team, #5 in the nation at the time, has since tumbled down to the #18 spot and has lost their identity. Series losses to South Carolina and Tennessee have Florida rattled, and trying to regain their footing. Meanwhile in Tallahassee, the Seminoles on an average pace, having won and lost most of their series by either a 2-1 or 1-2 ratio. A recent series loss to Louisville was not pretty, and they will look to rebound tonight against the Gators.

In College Baseball, it is important to never count your chickens before they hatch. This becomes exceedingly more important when it comes to a rivalry game, something both Florida and FSU know well. Florida State leads the All-Time series rivalry by a score of 130-121-1, however, they find themselves trailing in the games in Gainesville by a total of 63-49. Under the Gators current skipper Kevin O’Sullivan, Florida finds themselves 15-3 at home when taking on the Seminoles. This home field advantage could very well play a factor for the Gators, who find themselves on a two gam series skid.

Projected to get the start for the Gators is RHP Garrett Milchin (2-1, 6.32 ERA). Coincidentally. Milchin started the first game between these two clubs earlier last month, and had a tough outing. The Seminole bats plated a huge 7 runs in just 2 innings of work for the Junior, setting up for the tough loss the Gators had to endure. On the opposing bump is Freshman RHP Carson Montgomery (0-1, 3.66 ERA). While his stat line proves better than his Gator adversary, Montgomery has lacked a huge test against his pitching. Tonight should provide a good challenge for the youngster, and allow for some quality experience going forward.

We should have an entertaining night of midweek baseball ahead of us. Make sure to keep it locked in to Southern Slams Baseball for all of the news, highlights and updates regarding the Road To Omaha.
