The Bulldog bats came alive in a big way Tuesday as the Boys in Maroon took the Jaguars of Southern University to the wood shed by a final score of 15-1. The Diamond Dawgs used 16 hits on the night to down their SWAC foe and improve to 21-7 on the year. The home team used a 4 run 5th, 6 run 6th, and a 2 run 7th to propel them to their final win of an 8 game homestand.
Carlisle Koestler (3-0) drew the start on a “Johnny Wholestaff” night. The 7th year senior pitched 1 inning and was followed by 8 more Bulldogs, each throwing 1 inning a piece. Seeing action on the bump was Cade Smith, Mikey Tepper, KC Hunt, Dylan Carmouche, Spencer Price, Davis Rokose, Eric Cerantola, and Chase Patrick. The Bulldog hurlers combined to give up 1 run on 7 hits while fanning 17. 7 Bulldog pitchers finished their outings with multiple Ks. That K count comes straight from @KCountMaggie herself:
The Diamond Dawgs struck early and often, beginning the onslaught in the 1st inning when Rowdey Jordan opened the frame with a bunt base hit and advanced around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning to put the Boys in Maroon up 1-0. The Diamond Dawgs would tack on 1 run each in the 2nd and 4th before busting the game open in the 5th with a 4 run frame. The 5th began with a Tanner Leggett infield single and stole around to 3rd before Kellum Clark drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Lane Forsythe reached 3rd on a dropped fly ball that allowed Leggett and Clark to score. Rowdey Jordan then deposited his 4th home run of the year into the left field corner to put the home team up 7-0.
The Jaguars scored a run in the top of the 6th when Starkville native Jonathan Evans singled and stole 2nd and took 3rd on a wild pitch before scoring on a Brandon Green sacrifice fly to make the score 7-1. If the game wasn’t already in hand, the Boys in Maroon drove the final nail in the coffin with a 6 run bottom of the 6th that began with Davis Meche reaching on an error and scoring on a Kace Garner double. Brad “Mule” Cumbest then singled and Brandon Pimentel followed with an RBI base hit to score Garner. Scotty Dubrule, Lane Forsythe, and Brayland Skinner followed with back-to-back-to-back RBI singles and Drew McGowan then plated the final run of the inning on a fielder’s choice to make the score 13-1. The Diamond Dawgs would plate their final 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 7th on back to back big flies from Brad Cumbest and Brandon Pimentel to make the score 15-1 and send the Bulldog faithful home from The Carnegie Hall of College Baseball with smiles on their faces and a midweek victory.
The Bulldog offense was en fuego on Tuesday night with 11 different Boys in Maroon collecting hits. Rowdey Jordan went 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Brad Cumbest and Brandon Pimentel each went 2-2, with Cumbest plating 1 run and Pimentel plating 2. Tanner Leggett also went 2-2.
The win shirt on the night went to Mr. “Green Means Go” himself, Rowdey Jordan for his 3-4 night with a big fly.
