Aggies Saw Off The Longhorns, Earn Top 10 Victory

COLLEGE STATION, Texas– The Texas A&M Aggies defeated the rival Texas Longhorns (#5,#9), 2-0, on Tuesday night in front of a raucous crowd and packed student section. The Aggies were coming off of a loss in Sunday’s series finale against Georgia. This is always a game that is circled on the schedule for both teams. The game tonight felt more like a regional final than a midweek game in March. The Aggie faithful, led by “Section 12 was rowdy and in the longhorns players heads all night. There were multiple “Ball 5” chants, which both lead to the Texas pitcher being pulled from the game. If this was a regional preview I would not mind watching these two go at it again.

The Boys of Olsen rode a career best outing from midweek stater Nathan Dettmer. Dettmer went 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out six. The Aggies continued their pitching dominance when Jozwiak came out of the bullpen to finish the last 2 innings. The Aggies got their nation leading 5th shutout of the season in the 2-0 win. This is a very impressive feat, from a staff that many people thought would take a step back this year.

The Aggies got both their runs on the long ball. First in the 4th inning when Logan Britt hit his 4th home run of the year to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. This sent the Aggie faithful into a frenzy.

The Aggies would then tack on an insurance run in the 7th inning after things got chippy in the 6th inning. When walking off the mound at the end of the 6th inning Longhorns pitcher Tanner Witt seemed to mouth something at the Aggie dugout. In the bottom of the 7th, Mikey Hoehner deposited a pitch from Witt deep into the College Station night. The ball was hit so hard it hit a light tower and careened back into the outfield. Hoehner had some words for Witt and dropped a massive bat flip. This would be more than enough for the Aggies pitching staff.

After the Aggies got the insurance run in the 7th inning, they turned the ball over to Chandler Jozwiak, who earned the 6 out save. Jozwiak only gave up one hit in relief. Outside of Sunday collapse, the Aggies bullpen has been lights out this year.

With the win the Aggies improve to 18-9, while the #5 Longhorns fall to 17-8. The Aggies travel to Missouri for a weekend series starting on Friday.
