Game 3 of the road series against Alabama came on Saturday with a red-hot Rebel team looking to pick up another SEC sweep. While Alabama got on the board first, Ole Miss finally cracked the code and unlocked Alabama’s Shamblin in the 5th inning. After taking the lead, Ole Miss didn’t look back. The Rebels now sit at 20-4 (6-0) on the season.
Derek Diamond did not have his A+ stuff in this game, but he certainly had enough. He threw 6 innings and earned 3 runs en route to his third W of the season. Austin Miller came in to relieve The Doc in the 7th inning and allowed Alabama to push across 2 runs before Wes Burton was called on to finish the 8th. Josh Mallitz (whose arm might fall off if he keeps pitching this much) closed this one out in a non-save situation and the Rebels improved to 6-0 in the SEC.
Every single time it looks like Tim Elko is cooling off, he knocks the ball all over the place the very next game. He went 4-5 with 5 RBI in the series finale. Almost everybody in the starting lineup managed to get a hit off the Crimson Tide in this one, including TJ McCants who hit a single and a double to cap off his “SEC Freshman of the Week” campaign.
Ole Miss opened conference play against Auburn and took advantage. This week they faced a tougher Alabama team, but they still managed to pick up a sweep. Next weekend the competition will again get tougher with a road trip to Gainesville, Fl. The Gators have just opened up a beautiful new ballpark and would love to make a memorable opening season. That might be a problem for an Ole Miss team that got trounced in LaTech’s brand new stadium earlier this year.
A lot of attention is obviously on the upcoming Florida series, but the Rebels need to keep their eyes on the midweek game for right now. UNA @ The Consensus #3 Team in the Nation isn’t much of a contest on paper. The Rebels need to make sure that holds true and that their confidence is high going into Gainesville.
Ole Miss has reached another historic milestone this season. The are 6-0 in SEC play. The last time that they started a conference schedule this hot, there was an infielder on the roster named Archie Manning. Not only did Archie have a college career and a professional football career, but even his sons have had time to retire from complete and prolific professional sports careers before Ole Miss could replicate that 6-0 start. Hopefully Ole Miss can keep the magic alive in the New Mac, but even if they do not, this is still a special team.
