They say hitting is contagious, and that was definitely the case Wednesday night in Starkville as the Bulldogs of Mississippi State used 14 hits to rout North Alabama by a final of 18-1. The Diamond Dawgs used the contest to test 9 different pitchers and a plethora of fielders as they prepare for a weekend series with the Arkansas Razorbacks, which is a #2 vs. #3 matchup, according to most polls.
Mikey Tepper (1-0) drew the start, his first, for the M Over S, and the freshman from Fort Mill, SC had a very nice coming out party. He went 2 innings, giving up 0 runs on 1 hit while fanning 3. He was followed by an armada of hurlers: Houston Harding, Spencer Price, Cam Tullar, Stone Simmons, Riley Self, Dylan Carmouche, KC Hunt, Xavier Lovett, and Drew Talley. The pitching squad combined to give up 1 run on 6 hits while striking out 15.
The scoring happened early and often for the Boys in Maroon as the home team scored runs in each of the first 7 innings. The Diamond Dawgs would open with 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st as a Kamren James single plated Rowdey Jordan and Tanner Allen. James advanced around to 3rd and was scored on a Luke Hancock groundout. The Bulldogs would add 5 runs in the bottom of the second, 2 of which came when Brayland Skinner tripled to the wall in center, scoring Tanner Leggett and Josh Hatcher. See that below:
Tanner Allen then singled to plate Skinner. Luke Hancock scored 2 runs when he singled to center to plate Kamren James and Tanner Allen. The inning ended with the Boys in Maroon on top 8-0. The home team plated 3 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd when Lane Forsythe scored on a wild pitch. Tanner Allen added 2 more runs when his single plated Brayland Skinner and Rowdey Jordan to make the score 11-0. A 3 spot would be added in the bottom of the 4th when a fielding error led to Luke Hancock and Tanner Leggett scoring. Drew McGowan then drew a bases loaded walk to plate Lane Forsythe and make the score 14-0. The home team plated 3 more in the bottom of the 5th when Scotty Dubrule singled, scoring Kace Garner. Kyte McDonald then singled and advanced all the way to 3rd on fielding errors, scoring Scotty Dubrule and Tanner Leggett, making the score 17-0. The final Bulldog run came in the 6th when Brandon Pimentel drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Tanner Leggett. North Alabama broke the shutout in the top of the 8th when Drew Hudson scored on a Devne Daniel double to make the final score 18-1 and send the Bulldog faithful away from The Carnegie Hall of College Baseball with smiles on their faces.
The Diamond Dawgs were led offensively by Tanner Allen, who went 3-3 with 3 RBIs. Brayland Skinner went 1-3 with 2 RBIs. Kamren James went 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Luke Hancock added 3 RBIs as well.
The win improved the Bulldogs to 17-4(2-1) and dropped the Lions to 1-17.
The win shirt on the night went to freshman Mikey Tepper, who was dazzling in his debut start in the M Over S.
