When Mississippi State pitching coach Scott Foxhall spoke with the media in early February, he was fast to brag on his staff that Kendall Rogers of D1 Baseball called an “embarrassment of riches on the mound.” Coach Foxhall called them a “staff full of unicorns.” Many outside of the Mississippi State circle were quick to poke fun at Foxhall’s comment, but not many had anything to say after Foxhall’s boys pitched 39 straight scoreless innings from last Sunday to the 4th inning of this Saturday’s ballgame. Though the streak was broken Saturday, the Bulldog arms combined to give up 2 runs across 3 games against Eastern Michigan, giving up 1 run in today’s 4-1 victory that gave the Boys in Maroon their first weekend sweep of the season. The win pushed the Diamond Dawgs to 13-3 while dropping the Eagles to 4-5.
Freshman Jackson Fristoe (2-0) drew the start for the Diamond Dawgs and the Paducah, KY native did not disappoint. The tall righty went 4 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3. He was followed by Will Bednar who also went 4 innings, giving up 0 runs on 1 hit while striking out 7. Landon Sims came on to pitch the 9th to record the save (1), and he continued his dominance on the mound, striking out all 3 batters he faced. Those 3 Ks brought Sims’s total to 30 through 11.2 innings. That 30 Ks in 35 outs recorded.
The Bulldogs struck first in the contest in the bottom of the 2nd when Logan Tanner and Josh Hatcher opened the frame with back-to-back singles. Lane Forsythe then reached on a throwing error to load the bases with 1 out. Scotty Dubrule then came up and provided a bases clearing double on a line shot that just cleared the shortstop’s glove and traveled to the wall. That gave the home team a 3-0 lead. Eastern Michigan got a run back in the top of the 3rd when Matt Kattula hit a solo shot the left field to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The Bulldogs pushed the lead back out to 3 in the bottom of the 3rd when Logan Tanner deposited a no-doubter into the left field lounge to put the score at 4-1. See that home run below:
The score would hold at 4-1 to send the Bulldog faithful home from the Carnegie Hall of College Baseball with smiles on their faces and a weekend sweep.
At the plate, Scotty Dubrule and Logan Tanner led the charge. Both hitters had 2 hits and combined for all 4 RBIs. Tanner Allen extended his on-base streak to 16 games with an HBP.
The postgame shirt went Scotty Dubrule for his 3 RBI double that opened the scoring for the M Over S.
The Diamond Dawgs return to action on Tuesday for a matchup with the Bulldogs of Samford. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm CT. The Boys in Maroon open SEC play next Friday night as they travel to Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge for a 3-game set against the LSU Tigers.
