Golden Broom Award Tough Decision

Following this past week of baseball, the admin staff at College Baseball Smack immediately began scouring the results in order to find the most deserving team to be awarded the CBS Golden Broom for the week. As a staff, we did notice several close calls, however, two teams really stuck out as being deserving of the award. Sadly, we only present one each week, so we were forced to make a decision on how to settle the discussion.

The two teams in question were Pitt and Georgia Tech, both from the ACC. Pitt was able to go into Tallahassee and sweep #9 Florida State after defeating Jacksonville State on Tuesday. It was the Panthers first sweep over a top-10 opponent since joining the ACC for the 2014 season and just the second sweep over a ranked ACC team (No. 23 Georgia Tech on March 28-30, 2014). It was also the first road sweep in ACC play and just the fourth overall conference sweep. Very well deserving. Georgia Tech, on the other hand, traveled to #13 North Carolina St and swept the Wolfpack after defeating Mercer in their midweek session. Somehow we needed to settle this debate.

Settling on Georgia Tech came down to facing a better opponent in their midweek game combined with the one-sided way in which they pulled off this sweep. While the Pitt series was decided by 2 games of 1 run including an extra inning affair on Sunday, Tech left absolutely no doubt in this series. By a combined score of 25-9 with individual game scores of 8-3, 9-2, and 8-4, this three game set was never in question. Add to that was that it was the first sweep in ACC play since the 2018 season and their first road sweep for the Rambling Wreck since 2011. The 3-0 start in ACC play is also the best for the YellowJackets since that 2011 season.

Congratulations to the Georgia Tech YellowJackets from the staff at College Baseball Smack as well as the staff of Southern Slams Baseball.
