Aggies Head to Round Rock for Weekend Tournament

Many people expected the Aggies to be undefeated coming into the Round Rock Classic. Instead, the Boys of Olsen come in at 2-3 after losing twice to Xavier on opening weekend and then dropping a midweek game to Albeline Christian. The Aggies didn’t exactly instill confidence in Wednesday night’s win over Tarelton State, a game in which they needed to overcome a 5-1 deficit, before winning in extras.

The Aggies will look to get back on track this weekend when they head to the Round Rock Classic to face off against Baylor, Oklahoma and Auburn. If the Aggies want to be considered as a tournament contending team, they will need to have a good showing in this weekends tournament. They have 3 winnable games this weekend. A record of 3-0 would be great, but 2-1 is definitely in achievable. The Aggies will look to have a better showing than they did in last years neutral site tournament, where they went 0-3 in Houston, losing to UCLA, Illinois and Oklahoma State.

The Boys of Olsen open the Round Rock classic on Friday night against old conference foe Baylor. The Bears come into this game at 1-2 after dropping two games to UT Rio Grande Valley. The Aggies will turn to Dustin Saenz in this one. Saenz is coming off a tough loss to Xavier, a game where he went 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6. The Aggies did him no favors as they failed to provide him with any run support. First pitch for Friday’s game is scheduled for 6pm central, and will be streamed on FloSports ($).

The Aggies will be back in action again on Saturday when they take on Oklahoma in another showdown against a former big 12 foe. The Sooners come into the tournament at 2-2 after splitting their first 4 games. The Sooners split with Nebraska-Omaha and then lost to Stephen F Austin before bouncing back against to UT-Arlington. The Aggies will use Bryce Miller, who is coming off a shaky opening day outing where he gave up 4 runs on 4 hits in 3.2 innings against the Musketeers. Miller will be facing an Oklahoma team who has not been great offensively, only scoring 23 runs in 4 games. This should be a great matchup for the Aggies who need as many wins as they can get this weekend. First pitch will be at 6pm central and as stated earlier the game will be streamed on FloSports ($).

The final game of the weekend for the Aggies will be against the only ranked team that made the trip to Round Rock. The Aggies will get their first look at conference opponent and 20th ranked Auburn on Sunday in a non conference game. Auburn is coming into Round Rock after beating the breaks off of midweek opponent Alabama A&M, a 2 game set where the Tigers outscored the visitors 51-2, culminating in a 33-0 game on Wednesday night. The Aggies will turn to Jonathan Childress to lock down a potent Tigers offense. Childress got the start in the lone win for the Aggies over the weekend. Childress went 4.2 innings striking out 9, while walking 4 and giving up 3 hits. If the Aggies are able to get a similar outing from him I believe they have a chance to win this tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 11am central and can be found on FloSports ($).

Overall I believe the Aggies have a decent shot to win the tournament this weekend because their weekend pitching has been better than I anticipated. While it is not the same as when Lacy, Roa and Doxakis would shut teams down over a weekend, the pitching has not lost the Aggies any games this year. The bats will need to wakeup this weekend which has slowly started to happen as they have averaged over 9 runs a game in their last 3 games. The Aggies will need Will Frizell to continue is hot stretch at the plate as well, Frizell finished Wednesday nights game with 3 hits going 3-4 with 2 homers and a double.

Predictions:

Champion: Texas A&M
