Baseball America released their updated rankings today, and, for the first time ever, Ole Miss claimed the top spot. With 1 game left in the College Baseball Showdown, what better way to celebrate the #1 ranking than dressing out in the powder blues.
After 2 hard fought games in Arlington, the Rebels were due for an easy victory. Chatagnier got things going early with a double and stolen base in the 1st and would later come around to score. His 3-4 day with 3 doubles was impressive, but not good enough to be player of the game. That honor belongs to Derek Diamond. Diamond allowed just 4 hits in his 6 innings of labor giving up one run on a Cam Williams solo shot. The bullpen kept up their domination with 3 scoreless innings from Johnson (making his D1 debut) and Mallitz (making his collegiate debut).
The win streak now sits at 19 games and the DiamondRebs have lost just 1 game in the last 623 days. Chatagnier appeared to injure his hamstring legging out his 3rd double of the afternoon, hopefully he is back in action for the midweek matchup against Arkansas State on Wednesday. The Rebs also hope to get Cael Baker back in the lineup this week, although Trey LaFleur looked good enough to start at 1st base for this top ranked team when he blasted a long fly ball 5 rows deep to Rightfield.
Baseball America is certainly not the only polling agency that will rank the Rebels #1. Hopefully, this bunch can keep their heads down and keep grinding out wins. A trip to Omaha seems very much in the cards right now, but any Ole Miss fan can tell you war stories of post season struggles and heartbreak endings. This is the most talented team Ole Miss has put on the field since the 60s, so it is now or never for the Mighty Rebs. If they can keep on winning, they have a chance to cement their beloved coach Mike Bianco’s legacy in Ole Miss and SEC history.
Hotty Toddy and be sure to pack Swayze (while social distancing of course) Wednesday afternoon as the Rebels try for their 20th straight victory.
