The story of the Maverick’s season through its first 7 games has been pitching. The weekend starters have gone out inning after inning and put zeros on the board.
David Moffat leads the group with a 1.42 ERA, Kody Bullard is close behind with a 1.59, and Carlos Tavera posts a 1.64. Tavera also has 17 K’s in 11 innings of work.
Tavera pitched the opener this weekend and diced up 11 SIUe hitters but unfortunately took the Mavs only loss of the weekend. Carlos gave up 3 hits in 7 innings of work and 2 of those hits were solo home runs.
The Mavericks lost that opener to SIUe due mainly to the fact of not being able to produce anything at the plate. Other than an RBI double by Senor Dylan Paul, the Mavericks had some sloppy base running and the inability to get the clutch hit. UTA struck out 15 times at the plate, many times looking.
Game two of the tournament started out much differently with Seniors Andrew Keefer (TCU transfer) and Andrew Miller hitting back to back solo Home Runs. Miller’s second home run of the season easily went 420′ into a good breeze.
David Moffat shut down SIUe and UTA’s bats got cold quick as zero’s went up on the scoreboard until the top of the 8th. Moffat started the 8th with back to back K’s. Aaron Goecks walked on 4 pitches, then Brady Bunten came up with a pinch hit double. Moffat was removed for closer Caesar Gomez who was greeted with a single up the middle by Tyler Baustunas to get the game tied.
The Mavericks did not roll over as they answered quickly in the bottom of the 8th. Anthony Dominguez pinch hit and came up big with a lead off double. Tyler Rice came in to run for Dominguez and was moved to third base on a sac bunt by Conner Aube. Then Andrew Keefer delivered with a deep fly ball to right scoring Rice and giving UTA the lead.
Gomez came back out for the bottom of the 9th and a 1-2-3 inning for the win.
The following game was not as dramatic as the Mavericks put 4 runs up in the first inning and another 4 in the third and with Kody Bullard on the mound that would be plenty. Bullard went five innings allowing one hit, gave up 0 runs, and struck out 7.
UT-Arlington posted up 10 runs of the board before the night was over. Led by Senior Josh Minjarez. Minjarez had two home runs in the game and a total of 4 RBI.
Conner Aube also got hot going 3 for 5. Philip Childs stayed hot adding two RBI of his own. Childs leads the Mavericks and entire Sun Belt Conference with a batting average of .600
The Mavericks move to 5-2 on the season and head back home to face a hot DBU team who will be coming off of a series win against 11th ranked UNC.
